The First Hit

“Oh, no, you don’t!"

I tried to walk away from the argument, but my husband grabbed my hair and started punching me. I fell to the ground where he bit and scratched me while yanking out my hair.

My sister jumped on his back to pulled him off of me. He pushed my sister and pulled his arm back to hit her. I jumped up to stop him, but he was stronger than me.

A police cruiser pulled in the driveway with its lights on.

"We got a call from someone who passed by and saw a fight. Is everything okay?"

My husband's grandmother came to the yard, holding her chest. She begged us not to press charges. She said she'd have a heart attack from stress if he went to jail.

Law and Order

My sister and I told the officer we would drop the charges. He told Granny that the law required him to take my husband to jail because we’d sustained visible injuries.

The rest of the day was a blur. My in-laws sat with my sister and me urging us to let the court know it had never happened…
