This is the key!!! An appropriate response is hard to gage for neurotypical people as well.

What I’ve observed from my son’s behavior (he’s on the spectrum). He often doesn’t know how to respond based in his experiences responding “incorrectly” in the past. This, he opts to avoid responding so he doesn’t “mess up”.

This is one reason that we need to embrace neurodiversity in society.

We (neurotypical folks) need to respect neurodivergent minds. Your natural reaction is valid, and it enriches the human experience.

The innate honesty in my son’s responses are frustrating and enlightening. However, unlike with most people, I always know where I stand with him.

I appreciate that.
